I very nearly simply posted a few photos of him to save myself from writing too much, gushing about his physical presence, but that’s not it, is it? Of course, he is attractive on a classic level: big, blue eyes, a good head of hair, ability to look good with a full grown beard and also clean shaven, and a boyish grin all the qualities of the boy-next-door, but also the manly, sensitive lumberjack. The film itself is really good, considering I’m not a horror film person myself, and the script was phenomenal. One piece of work I will mention here is his role in the small budget, psychological slasher film The House of Him. (His episodes will be airing June 7 and 14) Richard glides seemingly without effort from one role to another, fitting in and adding to his surroundings and co-stars, creating real people out of beautifully crafted words. I did think that maybe he was being cast as a Scot because of his accent being so thick (and it is a lovely accent that I don’t hear enough so I am totally okay with it being so prominent), until I heard that he was going to be playing an American in American Odyssey. Some actors get pigeon-holed because they are told they have a “period face,” while others continue to be offered roles that best suit them. His adaptability to a time period, a location, a situation is what makes him as versatile as they can make them. His film roles include a reoccurring actor on a sketch comedy show, a killer in a horror film, an army doctor in a television drama set in WWI France, a troubled detective on a crime show, and a couple of roles that have yet to appear but are major none the less. Richard Rankin, not having been in many film roles yet, has already shown how diverse a talent he is naturally. Sure, it is fine to be good at one thing more so than others, but to be truly revered and recognized, being considered a Renaissance man is the highest compliment. I believe the most important quality any actor should have is versatility.
